About Golden Key
Golden Key National Honor Society is a national academic honors organization
dedicated to excellence. The Society is interdisciplinary and unites the
talents of the brightest undergraduate students in America. Outstanding faculty
administrators are active in Golden Key at both the chapter and national
levels.
Golden Key provides recognition...prestige...scholarship...fellowship...service.
The purposes of the Society are to recognize and encourage scholastic
achievement and excellence in all undergraduate fields of study, to unite with
collegiate faculties and administrators in developing and maintaining high
standards of education, to provide economic assistance to outstanding members
by means of annual scholarships, and to promote scholastic achievement and
altruistic conduct through voluntary service.
Membership is by invitation only. Each year, the top 15% of Juniors and Seniors
are invited to join the society. Part-time as well as full-time students
qualify, and members include both traditional and nontraditional students.
The Brigham Young University Chapter was chartered in 1985. Since then, Golden
Key has grown to have a significant presence on the BYU Campus. Recently made a
division of Student Life, Golden Key runs many service projects, lectures, and
activities. The chapter is student run and many opportunities for leadership
and participation are available.
Benefits
The most common question asked by prospective members is "What are the benefits
of joining Golden Key?" The answer to this question is long, but here is a list
of some of the most salient benefits of the Society
Recognition
-- Membership is by invitation only and members share the distinction of being
among a very select group. Golden Key is an international nonprofit
organization with over 250 collegiate chapters throughout the United States and
Australia. Leaders in higher education, business and public service are members
of Golden Key and support the Society. Membership is respected and recognized
throughout the world.
Scholarships
-- Two scholarships are awarded annually at each chapter to the outstanding
Junior and Senior initiates. Additionally, $10,000 scholarships are available
nationwide. Seven of these scholarships will be awarded in 1997.
Leadership Opportunities
-- Because the chapters are student run, opportunities for leadership
experience abound. The BYU chapter currently has 11 executive officers and
numerous committees, each offering positions for valuable experience.
Service Opportunities
-- The BYU Chapter is committed to serving the community. Through programs such
as Best of America, our recent "Give What You Can" canned food drive, and
various other service projects, students experience the joys of altruistic
service.
Honorary Members
-- Each year, the BYU Chapter inducts Honorary Members who serve as role models
to the students. Many give lectures and other aid to the students throughout
the year.
Activities
-- Many activities are held throughout the year to provide friendship and
diversion, bringing together high-achieving students from around campus. See
the calendar of events for more information.
Career Assistance
-- Golden Key members are distinguished nationally for their academic
excellence. Recognizing this, corporations seek to recruit Golden Key members.
The Career Assistance Reference lists over 200 such companies and is available
from the Chapter.
Publications
-- Golden Key publishes an annual magazine, CONCEPTS, which is available to
you. The achievements and activities of chapters and members are highlighted,
and you are encouraged to submit articles for publication. Members also receive
Key Notes, the Society's newsletter.
Conventions
-- Regional and International Conventions are sponsored annually to provide
leadership development and interaction with Golden Key members worldwide.
These benefits are available to each and every member of Golden Key, but it is
up to you to make Golden Key work for you. To get involved, contact one of our
officers!
